Costa
Rica
|
 |
|
I
recommend Costa Rica for a nice quiet relaxing holiday. My wife
and I returned completely refreshed, which makes a change from
our Japanese trips when we usualy return completely shattered.
|
|
Unfortunately
Cost Rica is not a courier destination. This did not stop us getting
a bargain flight. Using the
AirMiles that we have spent several years collecting, the
fares cost nothing. The flight stops in Puerto Rica to refuel.
On this occasion someone decided the aircraft was no longer airworthy
and after a 24 hour delay we finished the journey in a 737.

| Before
we left I arranged via e-mail for Vernon Bell of Bell Homestays
www.ilisa.com/bells/ to
fix up an itinerary for one week. Vernon met us on arrival at San
Jose, capital city of Costa Rica and we stayed the first night at
his home. At his suggestion we left the next day to spend 2 nights
at the Samay Lagoon Lodge www.samay.com.
The journey to Samay consists of 2 hours in a mini bus through very
diverse country side. Then 4 hours by river on a high speed motor
boat through beautiful jungle, spotting jungle animals enroute.
On the way we had to pass through a small part of Nicaragua, this
entailed having our passports stamped. |
 |
|
We paid $5
for the privilege at a border post which consisted of a small
wooden hut on stilts on the river bank in the jungle.
|
| Samay Lodge
is in a very beautiful location situated on a wide river mouth with
a tropical beach at the rear. Sea and river fishing is popular.
While we were there a party of Americans flew in from Texas for
a few days fishing. During our stay we went for a guided walk in
the jungle a daylight canoe trip into the jungle and also a night
canoe trip into the jungle. During these outings we saw monkeys,
snakes, frogs, and various birds as well as a sloth.back
